Funeral Flag
Catalog #: 334
Description: Abraham Lincoln Funeral Flag. This silk flag remnant is from a 36 star flag that adorned the interior of one of the funeral railroad cars in the Lincoln funeral trail for the duration of its stop at Indianapolis, Indiana on April 30th, 1865. The train arrived in Indianapolis at 7:00 AM that morning and departed at midnight. The copy photo shows Lincoln’s car and the officer’s car in the funeral train as it appeared on the journey from Washington, D.C. to Springfield, Illinois in April 1865. The flag was one of others made locally for the visit, and after the train departed, the flags were given to prominent Indianapolis families. Due to the nature of the silk flags to deteriorate with age, these remnants are the only example of what any of the flags looked like. The star section of 36 silver embroidered stars on the blue silk remains somewhat intact due to the blue silk being mounted on fabric. These remnants were formerly in the collection of Steven D. Stevens of Evansville, Ind. The remnant is 7 ½” by ¾”, and is beautifully framed in a 15” by 12” frame.
